How Long Does It Take to Become a Firefighter in the UK?

Quick answer

From submitting an application to starting as a trainee usually takes around three to nine months, depending on the campaign. Recruit training then lasts roughly 12 to 18 weeks, after which you spend around two to three years as a development firefighter before becoming fully competent.

There is no single answer to how long it takes to become a firefighter, because it depends on when your local service is recruiting and how their campaign is structured. But you can break the journey into clear stages, each with a realistic timeframe, so you know what to expect and can plan around it.

Stage 1: Waiting for a Recruitment Window

Fire services only recruit wholetime firefighters when they have vacancies, and many run just one or two campaigns a year. For some services the wait for an open window is the longest part of the whole process. This is why many candidates apply to more than one service and keep an eye on several careers pages at once.

The upside is that this waiting time is yours to use. Building your fitness, practising the ability tests and preparing your PQA examples all happen best before a campaign opens, when there is no deadline pressure.

Stage 2: Application to Job Offer

Once a campaign opens, the selection process itself typically runs over three to nine months. It moves through an online application and supporting statement, the National Firefighter Ability tests, a physical fitness assessment, practical job-related tests, an interview and finally medical and reference checks.

The exact length depends on how many applicants the service is processing and how the stages are scheduled. Popular services with thousands of applicants tend to take longer simply because of the volume.

  • Online application and supporting statement
  • National Firefighter Ability written tests
  • Physical fitness assessment and practical tests
  • Competency-based interview
  • Medical, eyesight and reference checks

Stage 3: Recruit Training

If you are successful you start as a trainee and complete an intensive recruit training course, usually lasting around 12 to 18 weeks. This covers breathing apparatus, ladders, pumps, road traffic collisions, first aid and the core skills of the job, and it is physically and mentally demanding.

You are paid during training, and passing it confirms your place as an operational firefighter.

Stage 4: Development to Competent

Finishing recruit training does not mean you are fully qualified. You then work as a development firefighter, gaining real operational experience and building a portfolio of evidence against the national standards. This phase typically takes around two to three years before you are signed off as a fully competent firefighter, which is also when you reach the top of the competent pay rate.

A Realistic Total Timeline

Putting it together, expect several months from applying to starting, a few months of recruit training, and then two to three years to reach full competency. The part you can most influence is the selection stage, because strong preparation reduces the risk of failing a stage and having to wait for the next campaign to try again.

Frequently asked questions

How long does firefighter training last?

Initial recruit training usually lasts around 12 to 18 weeks, depending on the service. After that you continue developing on the job for roughly two to three years before being signed off as fully competent.

How often do fire services recruit?

Many UK fire and rescue services run only one or two wholetime recruitment campaigns a year, and some go longer between windows. Applying to more than one service and tracking their careers pages improves your chances of catching an open campaign.

Can I speed up the process?

You cannot control recruitment timing or training length, but you can avoid delays by passing every stage first time. Preparing your fitness, the ability tests and your interview examples in advance is the most effective way to keep your application moving.
