Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service (LFRS) covers Lancashire, including Blackburn with Darwen and Blackpool. Its wholetime firefighter page describes a process that combines an online situational judgement test with paper-based ability tests later on.
After an application form assessed against the employee specification, LFRS uses an online test it calls the Firefighter Talent Screener, which presents scenarios and asks you to decide on the most desirable response from four options — a situational judgement test.
Candidates then choose between the bleep test (level 8.8) and the Chester Treadmill test (VO2 42.3 ml/kg/min). The practical assessment day includes a ladder lift, casualty evacuation, ladder extension, hose skills, equipment carry, ladder climb and enclosed space, plus written verbal and numerical ability tests that LFRS says are paper and pencil and timed.
At interview, LFRS says all candidates receive the questions 10 minutes beforehand, and it recommends the STAR method. Medical and pre-employment checks follow.
That mix suits a broad plan: situational judgement practice for the Talent Screener, timed verbal and numerical reasoning for the written tests (practise with pen and paper as well as on screen), and STAR interview preparation.
