Essex County Fire & Rescue
Essex County Fire & Rescue Service (ECFRS) covers Essex, including Southend and Thurrock. Its most recent wholetime campaign closed on 14 June 2026, and its pages set out the stages clearly.
ECFRS asks for GCSE grade C/4 or Functional Skills Level 2 in maths and English, and a full manual UK driving licence at the point of applying. After the online application comes a psychometric online assessment of natural behaviours, reactions and decision making; the FAQ says candidates receive personalised feedback from Arctic Shores.
The physical assessment day lets you choose the bleep test (pass at 8.8) or the Chester Treadmill test first, followed by a ladder lift (around 30 kg), equipment carry, manual dexterity, ladder climb, a 55 kg casualty drag over 30 m and a confinement chamber.
ECFRS says its interview is based on the service's values, the national Code of Ethics and the NFCC Leadership Framework, and can be face-to-face or online. An assessment centre with practical and teamwork activities and a fitness validation follows, then occupational health, references and an enhanced DBS check. Unsuccessful candidates cannot reapply for at least 12 months.
