Applying to South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue?
Practise the NFA firefighter selection tests — Working with Numbers, Understanding Information, and Situational Awareness — with timed simulations built for South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue candidates.
South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue
South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) covers Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield — a diverse patch covering urban city centre risks, large industrial sites, and extensive rural moorland. Wholetime firefighter vacancies attract strong competition from across the region.
SYFR uses the National Firefighter Selection process. Candidates applying for wholetime roles are assessed using the NFA ability tests online, followed by a physical fitness test and competency interview for those who score high enough.
The Situational Awareness & Problem Solving test is often the stage candidates find most challenging, because there is no single obviously correct answer — the scenarios test your understanding of fire service values, safety culture, and how to behave effectively in a team environment. Reading the National Firefighter Personal Qualities and Attributes (PQAs) before your test is strongly recommended.
Our Situational Awareness simulation presents 30 timed SJT questions with detailed rationale explaining why certain responses are more or less appropriate — helping you understand the reasoning behind answers, not just memorise them.
The three NFA tests
All three simulations are included for £14.99. Each is timed, scored, and comes with full answer explanations.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue — common questions
Which NFA tests will I sit?
The National Firefighter Ability (NFA) tests include Working with Numbers (45 min, 32 questions), Understanding Information (35 min, 25 questions), and Situational Awareness & Problem Solving (35 min, 30 questions). All are multiple-choice. Some services may use variants — always confirm with your specific brigade.
Can I use a calculator in the Working with Numbers test?
No — calculators are not permitted. You will be given rough working paper. Practise mental arithmetic and written working as part of your preparation.
How much does it cost to practise?
Full access to all three NFA test simulations is £14.99, one-time. No subscription, no recurring charges, and access never expires.
What are the PQAs for firefighter selection?
The Personal Qualities and Attributes (PQAs) are the behavioural competencies assessed throughout the NFS process. They include commitment to diversity and integrity, working with others, commitment to development, and effective communication. The NFA Situational Awareness test assesses how well your responses align with these values.
What is the SYFR firefighter salary?
The nationally agreed development rate applies — approximately £26,000–£28,000 rising to around £37,000 on full competency. Check the current vacancy listing for confirmed pay.
