Avon Fire & Rescue Service covers Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Its recruitment process page was updated in August 2026 for a campaign with training due to start in spring 2027, and it says the requirement to live in the service area no longer applies.
After registration, candidates complete around 1.5 hours of online questionnaires: 'Capture' (image-based values), 'Factors' (a behavioural workstyle questionnaire), 'Firefighter Dilemmas' (an untimed situational judgement test) and 'Mindgage' (timed cognitive tasks). The briefing documents linked from the page are published by Talogy, and Avon says verification tests are run later in exam conditions.
The application form includes a personal statement of up to 1,500 words, with evidence against the NFCC Core Code of Ethics. Shortlisted candidates take fitness and strength tests — the bleep test to level 8.8, a lat pull-down and a 30 kg shoulder press — and then practical tests: ladder climb, ladder lift and extension, a breathing apparatus tunnel crawl, dummy drag, equipment carry and equipment assembly.
The interview is described as one hour with six set questions and a panel of two. Job offers depend on the medical, DBS check and references, and training is a 13–14-week course followed by the Level 3 apprenticeship.
