Numerical Reasoning

2 pages · 6 statements · 3 minutes per page (6 minutes) · short demo · calculator allowed

About this test

Many fire and rescue services in England and Wales now use an online numerical reasoning test early in recruitment. Brigade packs describe tables, graphs and charts that you need to interpret and calculate from, usually in about 18 minutes, with a calculator allowed (for example Mid and West Wales and Devon & Somerset FRS).

Test Partnership’s briefing guide for their FRS test describes six pages, each with some numerical data and three statements, and three minutes per page. For each statement you choose True, False or Cannot Say (the information given isn’t enough to decide). This is practice in that style with invented fire-service data — not the official test.

How it works here

  • Practice first: one untimed page with worked answers.
  • Timed demo: 2 pages of 3 statements. Each page has its own 3-minute countdown; when it runs out your answers are kept and you move on. You can’t go back.
  • Use only the information shown. Choose Cannot Say when the exhibit genuinely doesn’t give enough to decide — not when a sum is just hard.
  • Open the on-screen calculator from the top bar (or use your own). It works with your keyboard too.
  • Every attempt generates new data. Results break your score down by type of calculation.
